Sanitation, Garbage Can Requirements, Special Pick-ups, and Sanitation Holidays
The full calendar for collection and holidays is at the bottom of the page.
Sanitation - for the full Village Sanitation Code Click Here
- Sanitation collection begins at 6:00 a.m.
- Garbage must be placed in plastic bags, inside of a plastic or metal container no larger than 45 gallons, with a lid.
- The total maximum amount of garbage per pickup is 100 lbs., inclusive of the weight of the containers. Each can should weigh 50 lbs. or less when full.
- Garbage is picked up in the side yard or at the front of the property. If residents place the garbage in the front of the property, it can be put out at sunset the day before and may remain for 12 hours after pickup.
Garbage Cans
Always use the correct-sized garbage can: 45-gallons or less. It is a violation of Village Code to use garbage containers that are either oversized or over-weight. Repeated failure to comply could lead to fines and penalties. Please keep in mind, larger cans with wheels and hinged lids are heavier than standard cans, thereby reducing the amount of trash a resident can put into the can.
Special Pick-Ups
Residents must call the Village Department of Public Works (DPW) at 334-0062 to schedule a pick-up for the following items:
a) Bulk rubbish items (large items that are more than 2’ x 2’ x 4’ or weigh more than 50 lbs., or otherwise would be difficult to collect): couches, tables, chairs, other furniture items.
b) Mattresses and box springs, which also must be placed inside of a plastic bag.
Special collection for metal objects must be arranged by calling DPW: BBQ, dishwasher, dryer, refrigerator, A/C, etc.
The following may not be placed out for collection: flammable liquid, explosives, pollutants, electronics. Contact the Town of North Hempstead S.T.O.P.
