Special Happenings

Something special is always happening in our Village:

The Westbury Public Safety Commission sponsored a Bicycle safety Rodeo. The participants were shown how to ride their bikes safely and given bicycle safety helmets. 

Village Tree Lighting Festivities The weather outside was delightful, and the fire inside is so delightful, and if you've no place to go, let it snow . . let it snow . . let it snow.    It did not snow this year and there was a nice turnout.

Members of the Village of Westbury Chamber of Commerce kicked off the festivities with doughnuts, cocoa and coffee.  Thanks!
The Westbury High School Select Choir filled the air with holiday songs.
The brass ensemble played holiday songs in the Gazebo on the Green.
Santa made a special visit.
The tree is lit.

 

MAYOR ERNEST STRADA VISITS DURAZZANO

Mayor Strada and a delegation from Westbury visited Durazzano, Italy to formalize the "unione" of the two communities as sister villages.

BOCCE ANYONE?

The annual Bocce Tournament   - the Westbury team is in action.  Check the recreation department for the next date.

 Italian Heritage Festival:

The Italian Heritage Festival was held at the Village Community Center/Recreation Complex. Mayor Strada is joined by local residents dressed as famous Italians.
The recreation building housed heritage displays.
One of the "Soaped Pole" Contest teams attempts to retrieve some of the items from the top of the pole - then it started to pour rain - slippery?

WTC Memorial American Flag Quilt Project 2002:

Mayor Ernest Strada and Govenor George Pataki joined the Westbury Cub Scout Pack 233 leaders and friends to view their quilt.  The flag is made up of close to 5,000  6 inch square patches and stars memorializing those lost in the attack on the World Trade Center.
Cub Scouts, leaders and friends were honored guests at the September 9, 2002 Nassau County Memorial Ceremony at Eisenhower Park.
Just in case you missed it Westbury 233 Cub Scouts'  quilt flag was featured during opening ceremony at the September 21, 2002 NY Mets baseball game cheered by 37,000 fans.
Members of the Village of Westbury Recreation Department staff joined volunteers at one of the weekend "Quilt-a-thons to sew the patches together. The finished flag measures 28 x 46 feet and weighs 125 pounds.

 

Fall Fairs:

Musicians from the LI Traditional Music Association entertained at the Quaker Fair.
There was more music at the Westbury B.I.D.'s Fall Festival and Street Fair. A quartet, standing on the corner, sang to the crowds at the fair. They are members of the Nassau Mid-Island Chapter of the Barber Shop Harmony Society and meet every Tuesday at 8:00 PM in Westbury at Winthrop Hall, 555 Advent Street.
Children had rides and "celeberties" to meet. The State Farm "Good Neighbear" is surrounded by new friends at the street fair.
$.25 got you a cup of fresh lemonade and a smile from 3 Westbury Brownies at the St. Brigid School Fall Crafts Fair.
